When you go out to eat, how do you pick where to go?
Submitted by Kristine.
I don't eat out too often. When it's within a group context, then group mood, tastes, etc. dictates. When it's just me, generally I am craving a specific dish from a specific restaurant. So I head out with whoever else I convinced to come along and seek to satisfy the craving. This past weekend is a good example. I discovered Guu a while back and the one on Thurlow has this amazing fried noodle dish. Pretty much every time I am in Vancouver we end up eating there for dinner. It had been a while since I've been up north and I started getting noodle cravings. So, Sunday, we loaded up the car and drove up 3 hours, spent a nice day wandering around Richmond and Vancouver, then ended the day with dinner at Guu... :)

What are your three favorite snacks?
Submitted by Sunscreem.
I tend to go through phases. Peanut M&Ms, ice cream, mango, watermelon, etc etc... Flavors of the moment.
Snacks are comfort foods for me essentially and I will never turn down a simple porridge with pork sung. Another favorite is to take two slices of plain bread, put strawberry jam on one side and a pile of pork sung on top... sweet and salty - YUM!
Do you remember your first flight? Where did you go? Why?
Submitted by Laurel.
I don't remember much about my first flight. You would think the experience of flying would be rather impressionable for a seven year old kid who had never been on an airplane before. Perhaps it was lost in all the craziness of a family being uprooted into the new world that was America. My family was part of the 80s wave of smart young Chinese students emigrating abroad to obtain Master and Ph.D. degrees from various American universities.
I remember the leaving of my first grade friends, with the solemn exchange of addresses and promises of letters. We stayed with my maternal grandparents for a few months before the ultimate move. I went to the local school there, but it was, and felt, very temporary. I went from learning the usual sets of Chinese characters to picking my way through the ABC. And suddenly, we were at the airport; my grandfather weeping to see his granddaughters go, my vast family waving goodbye, straining to catch the last sight of us as we walked into the customs area.
Of the flight itself, I remember nothing. It was the middle of winter, January, and we had a layover in either Detroit or Chicago. As we waited to board the second plane, I wandered around the lounge, made my way to the window panes and saw my first glimpses of snow. Big, fat flakes fluttering down in the dark night. The glass was cold to the touch. My sister and I figured out that if you blew hard onto the glass, you could create misty panes of condensation and have fun drawing on it.
Thanks to Daniel for the invite! I have to admit, when he first showed vox to me, I was rather skeptical. It seemed like LJ, just prettier and all gussied up. But, just as LJ communities totally evolved into thriving live beasts, this will probably end up a completely different application. I'm not sure how feasible it will be to maintain two journals (I have too many connections on LJ to drop it so fast), so this will have to be for a different purpose. I hope to write better here. The QOTD business is really exciting. Also, at first glance, this seems like a better tool for keeping track of my book and music consumption.
I've eaten there before too... it's good. read more
